I'm not a huge Ted Kennedy fan. Gotta give it up, however - to be awake during brain surgery takes enormous cojones.

With all respect, Sen. Kennedy had to be awake during the procedure, whether he liked it or not. Patient feedback is necessary during this kind of operation as every brain is mapped differently.

May I just add that my family and I wish him a complete and speedy recovery -- his voice is badly needed in the Senate...

I was going to say what Anon up there said. Let me just add that I watched a brain surgery procedure on Discovery Health once; it was really fascinating. The patient was awake for the whole thing and responding well. When her responses got fuzzy, the docs knew how to proceed. It was so very cool to watch. It all turned out well for the patient too.

BTW, your brain has no nerve endings so no pain.

I would not be capable of it whatsoever. I'd be out cold from the heebie-jeebies, nerves or no nerves.

We need Ted Kennedy's voice in the senate about as much as Ted wanted that hole in his head. Doh!
