Holy Hell

There have been a bunch of hurricane/no hurricane scares lately, so I'll admit I sort of tuned Ike out until I saw this photo coming over the wire... that's what it looks like in Texas, and the hurricane hasn't even made landfall yet. If this one ends up being as big as it looks, please consider a donation to the Red Cross, an organization that earned my utmost respect when working with them in the aftermath of Katrina. They are the real deal.

In my younger days I put in some eight or nine thousand (non-court ordered mind you!) hours of volunteer time with the Red Cross but after they announced they wanted to KEEP a large portion of the donations specifically made to aid hurricane victims, as part of a slush fund for future disasters they lost a lot of my respect.

At the Astrodome in Houston in the aftermath of Katrina, they ran the show. They were highly organized, had trained personnel, and had the necessary materials for a large scale relocation of so many people: beds, clothing, sanitary supplies, medical supplies - and an organized way of transporting, tracking and deploying them. They set up a complete working hospital - with departments and specialties - in an empty warehouse. They fed thousands per day. While the reps of the US Govt ran around like chickens with their heads cut off, the Red Cross did the heavy lifting and did it well, stepping in to do FEMAs job where FEMA was completely unable to do so. They were nothing short of amazing. Without them it would have been sheer chaos.
