Return of the Pitties!

My area has been without a pittie since my beautiful Sahara was adopted... until we got this bundle of fun this week, T-Boy - who's so new he not only still has that new-dog smell, but no adoption link yet! Fret not, he's still available!

This handsome guy has spent the last few years cooped up in a crate almost all the time. Other dogs would have cracked, but not T-Boy! Now that he's in a place where he has buddies and room to roam, he's got one thing on his mind: play, play, play. He loves people. He loves other dogs. He loves life. He loves bouncing around. And he wants to play with everyone he meets! It's so nice to have a pittie back...

Doing It Wrong

A CT company is rolling out a motor oil based on animal fat instead of petrochemicals, trading one disaster for another... or not, really, since those animals will be raised on feed grown with petrochemical based fertilizer and the entire process involves a heck of a lot of trucking. Move along, nothing to see here.

The Malevolent Murdering Morons of PETA

The Malevolent Murdering Morons of PETA have racked up another record-setting year for killing. Their 2008 report to the State of VA, as required by law, shows that they killed 95.8% of animals admitted to their "shelter" last year. This brings their 10 year kill total to over 21,000 animals, as PETA itself has reported to the state.

They took in 2,216 dogs and cats at their facility in 2008 and killed 2,124. 34 animals were transferred to other facilities, 7 were adopted out. 7 dogs and cats. In a year.

No Kill pioneer Nathan Winograd comments on how PETA lies about its kill numbers and why PETA kills animals - and why Ingrid Newkirk is obsessed with killing as many domestic animals as she can get her hands on using the donations of people who have been lied to, with the enthusiastic support of the Humane Society of the United States.

Terrierman has a great breakdown of the report PETA sends to the State of VA, the yearly foot-dragging and number-fudging on PETA's part, how to interpret the data, and how they compare to other VA facilities.

The copy of PETA's 2008 report to the state is available here.

The NY Times also weighs in... and makes the point that your pit bull is safer with Michael Vick than PETA president Ingrid Newkirk.

"I would go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself. Because I couldn't stand to let them go through other workers abusing the animals. I must have killed thousands of them, sometimes dozens everyday."
-Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA as quoted in The New Yorker.

Thought of the Day

Having a dog who barks like crazy when someone is approaching your door is really inconvenient... until the Jehovah's Witnesses visit you early one Saturday morning and decide that this is a doorbell they should skip. Thanks for the pamphlet, though.

Lili Beauty

Every day when I go into work and see Lili, I think the same thing - what, she's still here?

Lili's been here for years, and I can't figure out why - black dog syndrome? She's a wonderful, active, loving, enthusiastic, goofy dog who just loves life. She's gone on many sleepovers and gets great reports back. She's ready to go! Would you consider adopting Lili Beauty?

Connecticut braces for Jerry Springer

Jerry Springer will be moving his show to Fairfield County, CT this summer. The deal pulls a venue out of bankruptcy that serves as a forum for ballet, symphony and other high-brow performances, which will become Springer's new landlord. Sounds like a match made in heaven - and I dearly hope the Rich Forum will now mount a production of Jerry Springer: The Opera starring, for the first time, the man himself.

Clemance

I first met Clemance nearly two years ago to the day when I came to Best Friends to volunteer, and later was very happy to become her caregiver when I joined the staff. Rescued from a war zone in Lebanon, this energetic, playful and affectionate youngster is a favorite of many here at the sanctuary.

This past week, Clemance found her forever home with a wonderful couple from California. Godspeed, Clemance - and have fun!

Los Angeles councilman demands voucher program continue

LA city councilman Tony Cardenas, who co-authored LA's mandatory spay/neuter legislation, evidently doesn't know that mandatory S/N doesn't work. To his credit, however, he certainly realizes that without access to low cost spay/neuter, LA's kill rates will continue to skyrocket while the city's costs escalate.

HSUS 2007 Tax Return

Some interesting analysis regarding the Humane Society of the United States' 2007 Tax Return. Now, keep in mind that some of the analysis comes from Fur Commission USA, a trade group of mink farmers - hardly a neutral source. Still, interesting reading.
