WOW!
HUGELY important puppy mill news today, as the USDA IG issued a report on the sorry state of puppy mill inspection and enforcement and new legislation is being proposed to further target abuses within puppy mills. I don't know if this is a good law as I haven't read the full text, but I'm cautiously optimistic I definitely like that this issue is getting more attention at the highest levels of government!I was expecting the IG report to be rather sleep-inducing, but it's not - and be warned if you elect to take a look that it contains some very graphic photos of conditions found by inspectors in puppy mills.

Chicken costumes
Chicken costumes are now banned at Nevada polling places. We are only left to wonder what took them so long.

BSJ (Breed Specific Jokes)
QUESTION: How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a burned-out bulb?
Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Dachshund: You know I can't reach that ****ed stupid lamp!
Rottweiler: Make me.
Lab: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?
Siberian Husky: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.
Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Doberman Pinscher: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.
Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark......
Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.
Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.
Irish Wolfhound: Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover.....
Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there....
Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle....
Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb?
German Shepherd: Alright, everyone stop where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID,"STOP WHERE YOU ARE!!!"
Hound Dog: ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz
Cat: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So the question is: How long will it be before I can expect light?
Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a burned-out bulb?

Update on Franklin County Puppies
Pets Alive got this reply from the Franklin County Shelter this morning:
We are currently working with Measle... See More’s Animal Haven Pit Bull Rescue of Ohio to have all of the dogs involved in this case rescued (that are of sound temperament). We will not adopt out or send to rescue any dog that we believe is a threat to public safety or the individual or group that wishes to remove the animal from our shelter regardless of the breed. All of the puppies will be sent to rescue. While the news story is accurate in stating that we do not adopt out pit bulls (as they are deemed vicious by state law), they fail to mention that we do work with pit bull rescues that are in compliance with Ohio laws on a regular basis.
Thanks again for your genuine concern for these animals.
Sincerely,
Joe Rock

Adorable Puppies Need YOUR Help!
UPDATE 5/9/09 ATTENTION ALL: We have received word that the shelter is working to get these dogs into rescue. No further phone calls are needed at this time. Thank you all for your help!

We need YOUR help to save some adorable puppies!
A backyard breeder in Franklin County, Ohio, was recently arrested on drug charges and for running an illegal dog breeding operation. 19 dogs were seized and 2 were later returned to the owner. Of the 17 remaining dogs, 14 are puppies. These dogs will likely be killed by the Franklin County shelter because they are pit bulls, and Ohio is the only state to have antiquated BSL laws declaring all pit bull type dogs to be vicious - even newborn pups. It is the policy of the Franklin County shelter to not adopt out pit bulls.
Pets Alive of New York - a true No Kill shelter and sanctuary - has offered to take the dogs, save their lives, and evaluate them for adoption but needs the Franklin County shelter to release them to rescue so they can be moved out of Ohio and into proper care.
You can help by contacting the shelter and the county commissioners and reminding them that a good alternative to killing is available and that this issue is being watched far beyond the borders of Franklin County. IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE POLITE! We have every reason to believe that there are plenty of people there rooting for these dogs and we need to give them the opportunity to do the right thing! Please politely ask them to release the dogs into the care of Pets Alive.
